« The Pulverized Years » is a bit of a crazy idea : to gather on one Bandcamp page all the unreleased tracks I’ve ever produced.
All these songs have been recorded, over decades, parallel to my “official” solo albums. Most of them are mixed, mastered, and were supposed to be featured in albums. For various reasons (labels dumping me at the last minute, mainly), they were not.
The rock’n’roll mythology is very keen of these « lost albums » and I’ve paid my due to this with six (6 !!!). Yes, six albums which have not seen the light of day, and, believe me, it’s always a massive disillusion when these kinds of things happen.
At the time I sometimes thought the songs were not good enough, before often changing my mind later ; sometimes they did not fit in the current project, sometimes they were not finished in time or were just ideas, stripped-down works in progress. There are also a few demos there, lo-fi snippets, rough mixes and sketches.
These tracks were recorded in many places and with different equipments: big studios, home studios, iPhones, 8-track cassette recorders, iPads, GarageBand or Digital Performer software. On a few tracks, the sound is bruised, dirty, saturated, but with a step back and fresh ears I love it like that, and I’m fond of what it feels to hear them side by side with pristine-sounding tunes. I’ve been in love with most of these songs for decades and it’s been another huge disappointment to never have the opportunity to release them before.
What I’ve found interesting in digging into my vaults and discovering all these tracks is how sometimes they sound so different from what I did at the time and how they explore musical territories and paths I would not pursue in later years. This is why I feel it’s worth releasing them today.
So there you go. 167 tracks (they sometimes last a few seconds ; a nine to five job to listen to all of them, and there are still some leftovers which, rest assured, will stay forever in my vaults).
This collection is not built in chronological order, I preferred to create a new landscape as coherent, weird and surprising as possible and blend tracks from totally different periods (one recorded on an iPad in Berlin following one mixed in a 48-Track studio in Paris then one nailed on an iPhone in London).
Most of these tracks were performed and produced by me, but there are, on a few of them, contributions from other musicians.
Well… this is a whole world to visit, and quite a journey indeed. I hope it’s gonna be inspiring and you’ll enjoy the ride.
Rock’n’roll is the perfect beat.
